On August 25-27, the Monash Bushwalking Club went back to the Gariwerde ranges for the 4th annual "Wombly Walk" led by Duanne. As I found out, "to womble" is to take it easy. Other bushwalkers brought chairs, tables, a 2-burner stove with stand and propane tank, a wok, and other assorted silliness. Mind you, 3km isn't a big walk, but then, I didn't try it with a propane tank in my pack.

Photos were taken at 720 x 480, high compression, and save at 640 x 480 plus thumbnails. The photo quality is a bit low, which I think is mostly due to the compression. Compression artifacts are most noticeable in people's faces.

Saturday: The Walk to the Fortress

Larval form of bushwalkers. Intrepid creatures which sleep out overnight but hop frantically towards nearest tent during morning drizzle.
View of the morning camp.
Pete had a new pack, almost large enough to carry Duanne.
Breakfast. Cat, Phoebe, Briony, Duanne, Victor
Rest-stop maybe half-way. Andréa & Phoebe, Briony & (obscured), Duanne & Cat (above), Kelly & Albrecht (below), Pete
Steve, (Alex?), Pete, Phoebe, Andréa, Danny, Briony

A little further up the trail. Cat.
View from same spot.
Albrecht
Same spot. Danny, Andréa, Kelly, Cat, Cary, Briony, Victor. The track was narrow in spots: note Cat's foam pad. Yours truly didn't think of that when packing for the bushbash on th return trip.
Slightly farther, a nice rock outcropping provided some great views.
Looking out of the ranges into the plains.
Clouds, mist, rocky outcroppings, and Irish jigs played by Phoebe on the low flute: nice touch. I have a sound clip, but haven't figured out how to download it from the camera yet.
Rocks. But you knew that.
The great vegetable massacre. Phoebe, Duanne, and (Briony?). Womble relaxes between Phoebe and Duanne. Meanwhile, Pete prepared the sacrificial wok. And through it all strange songs were chanted (and when I get the sound file....)
Campfire at night.

Sunday: Sleeping in and Walking Out

Morning camp with mist.
A lush fog. Looking out from the overhang to the waterfall.
Duanne cooks pancakes!
Duanne samples pancakes.
We camped under a large overhang. Looking from the stream towards the overhang.
Closer view of the waterfall.
More water.
More water.
Again, there is sound....
Some of us bushbashed our way down. Lunchbreak photo. Duanne, Pete, Cat, Briony
Same break. Cary and Albrecht.
Played with exposure lock. Sky overexposed, but people are OK. Duanne, Pete, Cat, Briony, Victor
View with previous exposure lock setting.
View without exposure lock.
Navi/Moti-vational anomalies changed the exact route of the bushbash, but we still ended up in the gorge. Most of the bushbashers swam out down the gorge (with packs) from here. Four of us fought the bush back to a track.
Warming up after the hailstorm on the way down. All three groups (swimmers, bashers, trackers) meet up at the cars at about the same time.

Enjoy!
