During one weekend in August we joined MURP for their semi-annual games weekend. The location is an old monastery on the Mornington Peninsula, about an hour south of our house along the shore. Most gaming for the weekend is board and card games. The winner of the weekend was Settlers of Catan, a highly-recommend 4ish-person game (see photos). The weather was beautiful, the games were great, and the food was marvelous (thanks Rob!).

My apologies to MURP for getting these photos up so late.

Thanks to Rob Shankly for providing the names I had forgotten.

Fire Twirling

Although not an official sanctioned MURP activity, there are several proficient fire-twirlers in the crowd. Here are some nice images of one demo by Rik. I was experimenting with long-exposure settings on the camera.

fireWaves.jpg fireWaves: Rik begins to generate interference patterns in the gravity waves
fireatom.jpg fireatom: unfortunately, a slight twitch in the previous experiment caused him to fall inside his own Swarzchild radius, briefly modeling the Bohr atom just before departing for the planet core.
fireMicrograph.jpg fireMicrograph: next we looked at the art of fire-twirling through a scanning-tunneling electron microscope....

Scenes of the Games

Chronology is approximate. Approximations are absolute. Universal statements are false.
greyfriars.jpg Greyfriars
murp-night1.jpg Friday night wine and cheese: Sarah J's back, Gabrielle (hidden), Damien, Benji, and Kyle (well, his shoulder anyway) toast the festivities.
murp-night1b.jpg Friday night wine & cheese II: Alex Loke (hand to chin), Avi W, Kyle, Sarah (mostly hidden), Gabrielle, Benji, Rob, Julian (standing), Kate.
night1c.jpg Friday night again: Rob writes, "As above, Julian has sat down and Phil Keast is standing in the doorway. Of the bottles on the table, I would recommend the Brown Bros Gewurztraminer overt the Seabrook Sav Blank or the Moonah Brook Chenin Blanc. I can't ID the other one."
settlers.jpg Settlers of Catan: game in progress
settlersMatt.jpg Phil, Laura, and Matt. Is there a proper heraldic description of Matt here? (Damien suggests "rampant". :-) )
inwo.jpg Most gamers are social gamers. Serious addicts however have been known to go straight for the hard stuff. INWO (Illuminati, New World Order) is known to be a "gateway" game to the most serious addiction of all: Magic the Gathering. The first game ran several hours. Several more were played. Here: Anthony B, Campbell P, Ian T, Benji, Ken, Alex L.
kitchen.jpg The Secret Masters of Fandom prepare rituals of domination at the seat of their power: the kitchen. Sarah J, Kate's hair, and Rob
kitchen2.jpg Damien and Sarah J prepare lunch on Saturday.
manyGames.jpg A typical scene. "Daryl Moulder is sitting pulling apart bits of cardstock. Behind and to his left there are 6 people playing a game- from left to right; Julian (hands next to face), Jonus (coloured hair), Gabrielle, then the near side of the table is Benji, Django Upton, Emma Higginbotham.
On the RHS of the pic there are two games. Playing [Settlers of Catan] with your good Mrs [Laura] are P-Sarah (plaited hair), Matt and Jenni. The other game [Magic] consists of Tim Betz (check shirt), Phil Keast (beard), Dale."
shore.jpg The shore is a short walk or a shorter fall from Greyfriars. We are on the east side of Port Philip Bay (the bay in which lies Melbourne.) (Geographical hints provided for overseas family and friends. Everyone else in MURP will think this pretty obvious.)
sunset.jpg Beautiful sunset Saturday night.

Enjoy!
