Replica of Babbage's Difference Engine
The Difference Engine was a mechanical computer designed in the 19th Century (!) by Charles Babbage. Although somewhat beyond the manufacturing abilities of the time, the design was sound: it could have solved differential equations. Read the Wikipedia article for details.
In 2008, Microsoft's Nathan Myhrvold's replica was delivered. Wired and CNET covered the unveiling. Links to their stories are below. Following them, I also link to some Difference Engines you can build at home! Class project, anyone?
